No Age Limit on Dance Therapy

No Age Limit on Dance Therapy

Yesterday I caught myself smiling in the mirror. I was a little surprised at the face looking back at me to be quite honest. Realizing that I had observed my own joy I couldn't help myself. My smile spread like a runaway wildfire. It blossomed into a grin that finally moved into my lungs, down into my stomach and was exhaled again as a laugh. What an exhilarating body to soul connecting moment.

What brought this on you ask?

Zumba class!

The lovely local ladies in our little town love it.

What is Zumba you ask?

Zumba is one of the few avenues available to adult women who love to dance and don't necessarily have a willing partner to do it with. Zumba is about feeling comfortable in your own skin and moving your own way. It is a creative release and a welcome body to spirit reconnection at the end of a day that is often centered more on what you did instead of who you are. Zumba exercises more than the body, (it is a fantastic sweat producing workout) it cleanses the spirit and stretches the soul.

In technical terms, Zumba is a mixture of Latin, Hip- Hop, Jazz, Modern and Belly dance. It is composed of small simple and predictable combinations strung together loosely enough that every woman is encouraged to and discovers that she must dance her own dance.

I have been involved in formal dance training for years and have found great satisfaction in "getting in my own skin." I can't help but notice now that I'm in my 30's that what I do each week is somewhat of a rarity. Women my age don't dance much anymore. Every time I notice it I remember how lucky I am.

Why don't we dance more regularly than at an occasional wedding after a couple drinks?

Oh there are lots of reasons.

We're too busy. We don't have time to go out. We don't have anyone to dance with us. Our husbands don't dance. There are no dance classes available for adults.

What are the biggest reasons that people rarely say out loud?

I am embarrassed. I am not coordinated. I am not beautiful.

Beautiful people dance. That's just not me.

Yesterday I was smiling because a room full of women were in the process of celebrating how beautiful they were.

If you've lost touch with the girl that spun wild circles in the grass to music that didn't exist outside her own head, it's time to find a Zumba class near you.

Dancing with the body is good for the soul.

Tap dancing, line dancing, clogging, and contra square dancing, and can be enjoyed in larger groups or as a participator in a class. If you want the more intimate type of dance, you could always try Salsa, Tango, Flamenco, or the sexy belly dancing.  Hip hop dancing is also fun in groups, but you can also do this by yourself; and you get to dance the more popular tunes.

If you reside in or around a relatively big neighborhood, it is more likely that you'll be able to find classes or teachers that offer private lessons for each of these types of dance. You will want to be sure that the person from whom you take lessons from is knowledgeable with what he or she is doing. You can also search your local paper or websites for dancing groups or dance classes on specified days or nights during the week.

Regardless of your dancing experience, dancing is an excellent addition to your lifestyle with the benefits of  improving your health without feeling as if you are actually working for it or experiencing a sense of fear at the very thought of it.

Belly Dancing - Scandals and Success Of Belly Dancing's Checkered Past The Short Version

Belly Dancing - Scandals and Success Of Belly Dancing's Checkered Past The Short Version

While no one is positive of the exact origins of belly dancing, it is known that belly dancing has been around for centuries and has traveled to many nations and continents. The history of belly dancing is art with a purpose. History has shown that belly dancing has been used to worship goddesses, in prep for child bearing, entertainment at festivals and just plain fun.

Belly Dancing in the Middle East

In Farsi Belly Dancing is called Raks Sharqi, which means simply "Oriental dance". In the western tradition belly dancing has been viewed as a dance of seduction however in the oriental tradition the dance was for ladies eyes only, no male eyes got to see this beautiful dance. As sensual and revealing as the art has become in western tradition originally history shows that the dance was done in garb that covered the body well with no skin showing. The dance was done in a way that allowed the light fabric to dance with the dancers movements

As belly dancing moved to the west the interest in it grew greatly. Originally introduced to the U.S> during the 1893 world fair in Chicago it suffered an almost certain lackluster debut as the Egyptian Dance Show. However when an enterprising promoter re-titled the art Belly dancing and became an instant hit. Western culture mad many changes to the art first and foremost in garb. In the 1930's in Egypt the move to make belly dancing more alluring began by removing layers of flowing clothing in favor of bare bellies. However by the 1950s the bare midriffs caused such a stir that belly dancing was banned until a concession was made that the bellies would again be covered.

History In American

Today Belly Dancing is enjoying a rebirth of sorts however, when belly dancing hit the United States due to its sultry nature laws would only allow it to be performed on vaudeville or in the burlesque. Hollywood took this underground culture and spun it for the big screen often type casting the dancers as prostitutes or damsels in distress. This has led to a stereotype that modern instructors and dancers have to overcome.

As the interest in belly dancing took root in the states the public interest in learning the art also grew. By the late 1960's belly dancing lessons became more and more commonplace, which caused a growth in the number of people claming to be teachers, which of course cause issues among the instructors. Each instructor in order to create a unique "brand" of belly dancing began to alter the art. Because of this evolution a lack of unified definitions and terms came into being. This has kept the art from taking root in the dance world at large.

To rectify this problem a movement has begun to codify choreography and terms to bring about a unified system. This movement has been spearheaded by an organization known as American Tribal Style Belly Dance (ATS).

The bottom line is that Belly Dancing is alive and well and growing in popularity.

Tribal belly dance can make the most stoic of women relate to the inner free spirit within herself and spin free with the pulsating moves that the dance demands. The very name tribal belly dance has a primordial ring to it that releases one from the dreary life and transports the dancer to another level that enhances her, both personally and physically.

Tribal belly dancing costumes actually have such color and grace that every belly dancer wearing them is going to feel at one with her essential womanliness. These belly dancing costumes are overtly flowing, colorful and gracefully gorgeous. They gladden every woman with the flowing lines and gauzy veils that emphasize feminity. Finger cymbals called zills are worn to click between the fingers and the jewelery is exotic and bold. The tribal jewelery includes headpieces that are made of beaten silver or copper and are fairly large and help keep the head scarf in place. There are belts made of coins and semi-precious stones.

American tribal style belly dance has evolved from their fascination for the exotic rhythms and the music. There is a distinctive stylization to the American version of tribal fusion belly dance that somehow has a touch of Hollywood. Belly dancing is now a hugely popular dance form in the US for the simple reason that in today's world, women do not get a chance to flaunt their essential feminine nature and by doing the tribal fusion belly dance, they are subconsciously reaching out to the core of their essential womanhood.

Belly dance festivals, workshops and festivals, not to mention belly dance holidays, give ample opportunity to learn the craft whole heartedly and with dedication within a specified time frame. The art form of this dance has inspired several amateurs to seriously pursue the more advanced forms of belly dancing across the countries where it has originated. Most of the steps in the tribal belly dance are circular motions that are isolated in one body part at a time. The dancer gyrates and shimmies using clever muscle control to keep the rhythm going effortlessly. As you get better at belly dancing, flexibility is increased and tricks using coins and swords are popular to demonstrate the use of muscles especially in the belly and hips.

Tribal belly dancing whether American tribal fusion or otherwise, internalizes the rhythms and the outflow of emotion. It is channeled into an improvised dance that has its own uniqueness and cannot be learnt by rote. Each dancer makes a personal experience with the music and communicates with an individual style. It is more of a communication with the audience on a one to one basis and this is what adds to the simplicity and fluid sensuality of the dance. It is a misconception that tribal belly dancing is only sensual in appeal; it is actually a very mature demonstration that is not coy and at the same time is imbued with a rare dignity.

Many women in the US and Europe turn to tribal belly dancing because they treat it as a kind of self empowerment tool that heals as it teaches. Being able to belly dance is a healing medium for mind, body and soul. It frees them from their inner demons whether they have issues that need healing or otherwise. There is something very uplifting in challenging one's ability to learn a new medium and frees the spirit in music. It is a spiritual release that endows well being of mind and body.

Tribal belly dancing even though fairly young in inception; it is growing in leaps and bounds. It has been embraced for being a multicultural offering that is exquisite in its bold definitions and delicate message. It may seem very blatant but actually has a lingering sweetness that has not been lost through the centuries of evolving to what it is today.

Belly Dance Lessons & The Internet

Belly Dance Lessons & The Internet
There is no question that Youtube has completely revolutionised the world of belly dance lessons and belly dance education. It is almost inconceivable to remember how we became aware of other belly dancers, not to mention the wonderful stars of the great age of belly dance.

My own belly dance learning, other than my tutor Sausan, was from the incredible U.S. publication titled "The Belly Dance Book", edited by Tazz Richards. This book actually had pictures of Taheia Carioke and Samia Gamal; to me, this was precious.

Imagine my excitement when it became possible to easily search in Google these names and watch their dance footage. Access to belly dance performance lessons and teaching videos not only makes fair the belly dance scene, it also poses some questions. The first that comes to mind is how is it that not every devoted artist or famous belly dancer has got an Internet presence. Do these artistslack the desire, Internet entrepreneurship or business know how to exploit this new world medium?

One case in point, for for some time Dina of Egypt has been accepted as the number one Cairo bellydancer, yet her choreographies are often only available to us from phone cameras taken in badly lit dance clubs. There is no web presence nor even short demos to tantalise us to buy any professionally shot belly dance footage. Again, it could be the fame Dina has is is all she wants, however, I sometimes wonder what expert advice she has been given about the fact that many people are making profits from her exceptional skill. Does Dina know that other people are gaining financially from the views their Youtube account draw by including her trademark name.

Of course, there are others such as Sadie or Aziza who have gained fame and probably remuneration through having the benefits of incredible films, hordes of Internet fans worldwide and access to publice their latest DVD or master-classes.

The next question is does having easy access to our bellydance heroins take away from their mystique? When we look at Aziza in teaching mode and then if we are lucky enough to view her live, it is really more wonderful. My believe is that the flat screen medium of the laptop computer can never do justice to a real performance. She is, however, a bellydancer who has created followers and prestige through smart web based trading.

Finally, there are some of us who wish to connect with others online and also desire to put ourselves out there. For some, the web is a passive medium to be utilised for watching, consuming and often leaving posts. I feel unhappy, whether it's misguided or not that some of our most loved belly dancers may have missed out on the boat on this one. You can bet your last pound that some out there are most definately gaining the profits.

How To Belly Dance

How To Belly Dance

Article by Mumby

At first it may seem difficult to learn how to belly dance, but with a good instructor and patience you can pick up the basic moves of this enticing, ancient dance.

Belly dancing is a fun way to stay in shape for all ages and body types. Belly dancing music was very prominent and ubiquitous in the U.S. throughout the 1950s resulting in dozens of recordings along with quite an assortment of fascinating album covers. The theme was: middle class women, spice up your married lives by belly dancing for your spouse. Belly dance isn't even a completely descriptive term. Middle Eastern dance encompasses so many dance forms, even going into African tribal dances, Latin dances such as Flamingo and more.

When taking classes it has been found that students improve pretty fast and are generally able to learn the basics in a few sessions. Wearing athletic clothing or dancewear is very helpful and can be barefoot or may choose to wear dance footwear such as sandals, ballet slippers, or even ballroom shoes or jazz sneakers. You'll want to make sure that you wear clothing in which your torso and legs can easily be seen such as with yoga pants. For the top a sports bra or other crop top will be necessary.

Movements are fused into combinations or choreography that are open to individual interpretation and stylization. Learning how to belly dance incorporates movements known as "drills" to engrain and help with learning the basics. You will also become familiar with the use of some of the props such as a veil, scarf, and finger cymbals. Moves include shoulder and hip shimmies, hip drops and lifts, snake hips and figure-eight's, rib circles and rib drops, as well as basic dance posture and arm placement. You can probably see why it is important to wear comfortable clothing.

Outside of class a student should practice doing the moves learned for a good 20 minutes each day. This will help to make the basic moves become almost 2nd nature and, as an additional benefit, you'll probably start shedding some of those unwanted pounds! Fast belly dance moves can burn 250-300 calories per hour. Practice your belly dancing until you are confident enough to display your new skill.

Belly dance is a culture; it is a dance form that is highly artistic. It started thousands of years ago as a birth ritual dance, a celebration for birth and new lives. Today it is just as mysterious and appealing as ever.

All About Belly Dancing Clothes

All About Belly Dancing Clothes

Do you love to dance? Why not try belly dancing! Women have been belly dancing for centuries and love the way the movements work so naturally with their muscle structure. The weaving and flowing motions can help keep you healthy and fit. Some people think you only work out the stomach and hips but when you belly dance, you are working out your entire body. One of the things that makes this dance so much fun is the belly dancing clothes.

They are bright and colorful accented with flowing scarves, veils and other accessories like finger cymbals and exotic jewelry. Most of the time the tops and skirts are made of silk or cotton because these materials are lightweight and easy to move in. They come in vivid reds, blues, yellows and greens and as they flow around you the clothes offer a hypnotic appeal. The scarves and belts often have coins, sequins and beads attached to them and as you sway with the music these accessories can give off mesmerizing colors and sounds. A belly dancer will often wear an anklet (a bracelet around the ankle) that adds to these sounds. These anklets have tiny bells hanging from them that jingle as the dancer moves. Another interesting accessory that helps to complete belly dancing clothes is an arm cuff. This bracelet comes in very vivid colors and adds to the allure of the dance. If a dancer is not in her bare feet, she will be wearing sandals with a lot of straps that add to the captivating dance.

Belly dancing clothes and accessories accentuate a dancer's movements and make the experience so much more enjoyable for those watching. The colorful, flowing clothes and the captivating music create a spellbinding blend of color and motion and sound that is so appealing and pleasurable not only for those who are watching, but for the women who are dancing as well.

Belly Dance Trought Time

Belly Dance Trought Time

For generations, the fascinating powers of Belly Dance charms travelers, pilgrims, kings. In the early days, this dance was performed by women in the Middle East and North Africa, with mystical and ritualistic character. About these days we can only guess, because the material on the subject is scarce.

Unlike other dances such as Flamenco, Tango, Forro, Charleston or Ballet, this ancient dance does not have an official name. Originally, the dance was known as Raks el Sharqi (Dance of the East or Eastern Dance in Arabic), or only as Oriental Dance. The term we know, Belly Dancing, originated from the French Danse du Ventre, probably acquired by the impact that the sinuous hip movements had in the conservative Victorian society. Despite this, Raks el Sharqi is more than just hip movements, it involves gentle movements of the arm, interpretation, sensuality, lightness, grace and self-esteem.

Born in the cradle of civilization, probably dating back to Mesopotamia and perhaps before, this Art is currently popular worldwide. As has been spreading and developing over time and regions, it incorporated elements from every corner of the world, making the Middle Eastern Dance earn a unique charm in each place. We can observe a unique style of dance, added from the social, psychological, emotional and cultural needs of the countries in which it is practiced. Even the traditional belly dance costumes that we know are a scenic incorporation, that is, it was idealised to fit the stage of cabarets of the countries of East and West when the fever of Orientalism exploded.

Around this time, the former ritualistic, bare feet and popular dance, received strong influences of classical ballet, with the departure of several native dancers in the region to other parts of the world. Hence, the dance has absorbed the armed and elegant arms, the arabesques, turns, posture, and many other things that are essential to form what we now know as Belly Dance.

There are lots of folkloric dances that are included on the repertoir of a Belly Dancer, such as: Shamadan (chandelier), Khaleegee, Saidi, Hagallah, Meleah Laff and Zar. These are not considered "Bellydance", but a dancer who knows them has an increased knowledge of the Arabic cultures and a richer variety of performances.

Despite some disagreement about the origins of this art, all seem to agree on one point: the dance that is practiced today, probably is the last vestige of the rites of the priestesses in the Middle East.

An Introduction To Romani Music

An Introduction To Romani Music

The sound of Romani music is the most journeyed sound in the world having covered thousands of miles in an expedition that has lasted many centuries and has taken on the colors of all the places it has settled along the way. Romani music is probably the most enduring influence of Roma culture on other non-Roma societies. Flamenco of Andalusia owes most of its exuberance and ardor to Roma tradition. European Jazz owes much of its innovation to Roma jazz guitarist, Django Reinhardt. Classic music demonstrates Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No. 5, or Liszt’s Hungarian Dances and Rhapsodies. The Gypsy Kings have created a bandwagon effect of dance hits topping the charts for years and selling millions of albums worldwide. Finally, Roma bands are ardently hired from prominent musicians like Serbians Goran Bregović and Boban Marković, Romanian Fanfare Ciocârlia and many others.

The Romani music is a distinct field with a greatly varied content. Today, Roma musicians perform anything from folk music to Balkan fusion, Latin, jazz, alternative, classical and romantic music. Whole families of Roma musicians have been trained in playing music and initiated the training of their children to preserve their long-standing traditions. Instrumented in various ways depending on the region it originates from, the Romani music can trace its roots in Hungary, Spain, Turkey or other regions of the Eastern Europe and the Balkans.

The roots of Hungarian music encompass elements of Romani music that was instilled in the music themes of Béla Bartók and Franz Liszt. In modern times, Hungarian Romani music is often represented by the czardas and the verbunkos which are collectively referred to as ‘cigányzene’. Particularly, the verbunkos are performed at conscription ceremonies to influence young men to join the army. However, Hungarian Romani music bears unique folk elements which are for the most part without instrumentation. Roma musicians use sticks and make rhythmic groans to reproduce the sound of instruments with a technique called oral-bassing. Modern Romani musicians like Romani Rota and Ando Drom have added guitars to the Hungarian Romani music.

Spanish Romani music is broadly recognized in the form of flamenco. Although flamenco was born in Andalusia, it has been significantly influenced by the Kathak dance, the traditional Indian dance and Indian singing style that the Roma immigrants brought with them in the 15th century. Flamenco is a multidimensional art form that encompasses music, rhythm, poetry, dance and vibrant instrumentation in a visual mastery. There are various types of different palos (musical forms) in flamenco and each has different atmosphere, rhythm, theme and style. Some are danced, some are played on guitar and sang and some are only sang, which is, in effect, the soul of flamenco. However, the Andalusian Roma, known as the Gitanos, have long preserved the legacy of flamenco.

Romani music in Turkey echoes the traditional Turkish music with the clarinet, violin, kanun and darbuka and the lifestyle with gathering at the ‘taverna’, eating food and having alcohol, while enjoying the spectacle of a belly-dancer. Typically, the music is accompanied by vocal improvisation in free tempo and an instrumental improvisation (ritimli taksim) that enables the belly-dancing figures. The best known representative of the Turkish Roma musicians is the clarinetist Mustafa Kandirali.

Bulgarian Romani music resembles a lot to the traditional chalga music, while in Romania, the Lăutari are the traditional Romani musicians that play at weddings, funerals and other social events. Some great examples of great Roma musicians in Bulgaria are the clarinetist Ivo Papasov, who received the BBC prize for the best clarinetist in 2006 and the saxophonist Yuri Yunakov, who is best known as the ‘wedding master’. The younger generation of Bulgarian Roma musicians is represented by kaval player and composer Theodosii Spasov and his band ‘Wild Horses’ that play an innovative mix of Balkan folk and jazz.

The Romani music is much more diverse than one can hear in the borrowed Romanticism of Franz Liszt, although it wasn't until the revolutionary film of Emir Kusturica ‘The Time of the Gypsies’ in 1988 and the wonderful music of Goran Bregović that the West truly became aware of it. Despite its characteristically soulful and melodramatic vocals that are anchored by prominent glissandi between the notes, the Romani music cannot be easily defined because the Roma have lived and played music in totally diverse localities. The Romani music tends to absorb characteristics of diverse environments and sounds and embellish them with turns, runs, twists and trills producing new sounds, which are an eclectic and explosive blend of Balkan sounds, jazz and traditional Roma folk.

Belly dancing clothes are always “in” for Halloween. They are always fun too. Most outfits consist of a bra, harem pant or skirt and belt set. Outfits can also include a veil or scarf. They come in a large variety of colors and styles. They are to be had in skirt and top sets, pro full costumes, belly dance tribal costumes, harem pants and top sets., belly dance pro bra and belt sets and pera dance wear. Sequins, beads, tassels, metal coins, swags, dangling chains and shells all adorn these costumes.Belly dance is a Western coined name for a traditional Middle Eastern dance, especially raqs sharqi in Arabic. It’s sometimes called Mid Eastern dance or Arabic dance in the west or by the Greco-Turkish term ciftelli. The belly dance is a translation of the French “dance du ventre”, which was applied to the dance in the Victorian period. Belly dance takes many different forms depending on the country or region, both in costume and dance style. Although, contemporary forms of dance are usually performed by women, some of the dances, especially the cane dance are performed by men. A man’s costume resembles that of a genie costume in nature.Raqs sharqi means oriental dance. It is most familiar to Westerners and is performed in shows, cabarets and restaurants world wide. Raqs baladi means folk dance and is done in folkloric style. It is usually done by men and women at festive social occasions like weddings.Costumes usually are categorized by Egyptian, Lebanese, Turkish, Indian, Spanish, Javanese or American style. Belly dance arose from many dance styles done in North Africa and Middle Eastern regions. Some think it had its roots in Arab tribal religions as a dance to the fertility goddess. It’s thought that an earlier origin of the dance was performed by Arabic women to the moon god. Others believe that it began as an independent dance before pharaohs and represented the pharaohs’ carnal desire. Another theory is the North African. It is described as a dance referring to childbirth and that it was done for women by women.Belly dancing was made most popular by the West in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries when artists depicted romanticized images of harem life in the Ottoman Empire. It was about this time that individuals performed world wide at various fairs. Often it drew crow ds en mass, even bigger than any of the other exhibits. In the West, the costume most associated with belly dance is the debiah. It owes its creation to the Victorian painters or orientalism and the harem fantasy productions of vaudeville, burlesque and Hollywood during the turn of the century rater than to Middle Eastern dance. The bediah style includes fitted top or bra with a fringe of beads or coins, a fitted hip belt with fringe of beads or coins and a skirt or harem pant. The bra and belt may be richly decorated with beads, sequins, braid and embroidery. The belt may be a separate piece or sewn into the skirt. The hip belt is a broad piece of cloth worn low on the hips. It may have a straight, angular or curved hem. The bra usually matches. The classic harem pant is normally gathered at the ankle and full in general. Sometimes pants and a sheer skirt are worn together. Skirts may be flowing and sheer with one or multiple colors and layers of sheer fabric. In Egypt, the costume is usually more modest. It is basically made from lycra with cutout sections and adorned top and hip. There is no bare midriff. In Turkey, the bediah style is more common. Styles are either playful and flirty or more moderate. In Lebanon, the skirts are more shear and skimpier, showing more of the body. Veils are often worn as are high heels. In the US, dancers often buy their costumes from Egypt or Turkey. The American style usually includes a headband with fringe and a sheer harem pant or skirt and coins and metal work decorate the bra.For the baladi and folkloric belly dances, a full length belede dress or galabeyah is worn with or without cutouts. When choosing belly dancing clothes, it’s important to not forget your props. These usually include finger cymbals, cane, veil, sword, headdress, fire sticks, tambourine, fan or snakes. Choosing this costume for Halloween can be a fun, colorful choice; not to mention a real conversation starter. It’s a must have costume for this fun occasion.Greco-Turkish term ciftelli. The belly dance is a translation of the French ‘dance du venuture

Learn All the Secrets of Belly Dancing

Learn All the Secrets of Belly Dancing

Article by Dane Stanton

The word belly dance, is a western name for an Arabic style of dancing. In Arabic countries it is simply called oriental dance and some American enthusiasts call it Middle Eastern Dance.

Belly dancing is a form of dance that is not so widely acknowledged in America and other countries, but there is still a large following in the vast ethnic sector. There is a lot of debate in the community as to the exact origin of belly dancing. Some believe it descended from early Egyptian dances, others say it is derived from religious dances and some say it comes from the migration of the Roma people, with Indian origins. No matter where it comes from, the fact remains that it is an exquisite form of dance and its popularity and following grows every year.

Belly dancing is a great way to increase fitness. It is a very active and energetic style of dance, which elevates the heart rate and increases cardio vascular ability, so one of the many benefits of this form of dance is to elevate fitness level, and burn fat. It also helps to stretch the muscles, and limber the joints up so that the participant becomes more nimble and agile. With these two health related factors, it shows us that it's a great hobby for those with a few extra years on the clock to keep them young and vital, and also just for the general health of people of all ages.

This style of dance can be tailored to suit anyone's personal abilities, so that it is not overly strenuous on the cardio vascular system, or on the stretch in the muscles. The fat loss aspect is something that belly dancing has actually been manipulated for. Some fitness experts have used belly dancing in personal training regimes to help a client lose weight effectively. This is possible because it is a fun activity, so the client will be happy to perform a certain amount of belly dancing practice each day to work towards their fitness and weight goals.

Males in belly dancing are not very common however there are some males in this form of dance that are very masterful at the art. Even though they are amazing in their performance, they are sometimes not looked upon with much respect in the belly dancing community, as it was an art created by women, and was not intended for men to perform. This topic is one of much debate with the introduction of women's rights, why shouldn't men be able to do the same things women can do, and so on.

All these factors make belly dancing an ideal activity for anyone of any skill level or age. It is both fun and good for physical fitness, so there is a number of positive's and no negatives. Give it a try!

Silom Village ? Savour the Orient

Silom Village ? Savour the Orient

The multi faceted Silom Street in Bangkok says ‘Sawasdee' or welcome in Thai to all its visitors who traverse to explore ‘Silom Village'. From fine dining to street shopping and a comforting foot massage, Silom Village trade centre offers the discerning traveler all that they yearn for.

From its humble beginnings many decades ago, the Silom Village Trade Centre has blossomed into a crowd pulling glamorous village that is uniquely Thai. Originally it had a few shops which sold Thai souvenirs, restaurants which served authentic Thai cuisine and stalls which demonstrated the art of preparing Thai desserts. Now it has evolved into a full fledged shopping area, where you can find clothes, jewellery, antiques and massage parlors in addition to all those.

The shopping area is replete with its own theatre, the ‘Ruen Thep' entertainment hall, where dances and plays are held every night.

Each performance is based on a traditional Thai storyline and portrays the cultural attributes of Thailand. Sumptuous dinner buffets are laid for guests to dine while drowning in the elegance and charm of the performers.

The row of buildings which house the trading centre are highly acclaimed for their rich brown teak roofs and interiors and inimitable Southern Thai styles. King Rama V, built them well over a hundred years ago, thence they have stood majestically adding an air of splendor to the area. Not far from the shopping centre is the Lumpini Park where one can practice Tai Chi and yoga and catch a revitalizing breath of fresh air.

Shop till you drop, indulge in Thai cuisine, enjoy a musical performance and revel at a Bangkok service apartment; that is the order of the day in this part of the world.

President Park Bangkokis among the most sought after in this regard due to its affluence and luxury.

Fadwa Kiyal bellydance oriental dance Kathem al Saher Zidini aeshqan Hezzi ya Nawaem

I fell in love with this dancer when I watched this and some other uploads by someone (sorry I cannot remember who it was!) here on youtube. I could not stop watching her, particularly in this dance. She dances to Iraqi singer Kathem al Saher song Zidini aeshqan (Increase my Passion). I love her emotion and almost theatrical performance. Notice when in the first verses she expresses the music where the singer sings "drown me my lady, the sea calls me". I love her theatrical expressions, but I can see how not everyone will like it. I cannot say how much her dance pushed me to develop my own dancing. I have started taking lessons after seeing her, bascially. I love her facial expressions, her energy.. she is my idol, briefly. While of course I do not say she can rival the really big ones like Suhair Zaki yet, but there is something young, fresh, modern about her that I believe can appeal to us in the 21st century. A new interpretation of dance. I personally believe it is important especially for young Arab dancers. Dancers the world over, from Russia to America mimick Golden Age Egyptian dancers' every move. Innovation will best come from the Arab culture itself IMO, no one else can develop something new aside the ever similar interpretations of classical sngs without losing the soul in Arabic music, which happens so easily when non Arab dancers innovate these days.. I noticed many of Fadwa's performances from the show Hezzi ya nawaem (Star Academy for oriental dance, but ...
